We recently were involved with a large university. Working closely with the HR department we were involved in a Power App / Azure Databricks application being developed to help remote working staff to input into their annual staff appraisals.

The projects goals were twofold:

  1. To provide an online solution using Power Apps so remote workers were able to facilitate their reports and process their annual staff appraisals.

  2. To provide an understanding of the staffs' sentiment within the university and to help support and facilitate both a positive culturally and facility change.

The university had traditionally performed the annual staff appraisal within the confines of staff one-to-one meetings with their reportees. Together, with the reportee and the line-manager the staff appraisal process would be performed using a paper report in an interviewee style.

The solution was to take the process online with a stage base process that also triage HR. The final solution make use of Power Apps, Power Automate and then using anonymised data it was ingested into a notepad in Azure Databricks that was then analysed for staff sentiment. Using anonymised data taken from the staff's forms we were able to process this data using Artificial Intelligence, we were able to create a table on the parquet data to analyse it, at scale, with Spark SQL. The output of which was 90% accurate. The anonymised feedback was then analysed by HR. Using the data, the HR department was able to build up a complex picture of the staffs' sentiments and a valuable insight into what where the priorities for changes and improvements.
